Chiropractic Healed Me

Castle Downs Chiropractor Dr. James Bortolotto

Back when I was 15 years old, I hyper-extended my lower back while taking diving lessons at the local YMCA. Following this acute injury, I was unable to move my legs for a couple of days and I was told to try a chiropractor by my family doctor. I went for a few visits and regained full movement in my legs and was advised my lower back may bother me for years to come. The doctor was correct, as I began to develop low back pain and right sciatica that haunted me for a few years. Only chiropractic treatment has kept me fully functioning over the years combined with exercises.

I entered university in Saskatchewan with the decision to go into a healthcare field. I was unsure at the time which direction to go and thought I'd try medicine. I completed my first two years of "pre-med" and as my lower back continued to haunt me while sitting long days in class, finally decided to move to Toronto to study the field of Chiropractic. I was unsure at the time if this was the right move, but it quickly became apparent to me that this was indeed the right path for me. It offered an alternative to taking pills for my back and also directed me towards a more healthy overall lifestyle. After moving to Edmonton, I soon realized that this path chose me as much as I chose it.

A Journey Towards Chiropractic

Dr. Bortolotto attended the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto, the only Canadian Chiropractic College in Canada. What surprised me most was the quality of the professors and the quality of the student body. First year students in Canada had the highest entrance requirements in chiropractic. The education well prepared me for practice. I particularly enjoyed neurology and sports medicine. I decided later in my career to pursue a fellowship in Neurology and a fellowship in Rehabilitation.

In our practices we not only treat patients who come to us with painful ailments like low back pain, neck pain, headache or work injuries, but we also believe strongly in prevention and health maintenance. Some patients once out of pain continue with periodic chiropractic treatment to keep functioning at a high level and maintaining their overall health.

My Chiropractic Lifestyle

Dr. Bortolotto, grew up in Regina, Saskatchewan. I was always active in sports and following high school attended both the University of Regina and University of Saskatchewan taking pre-med. During my school years was active in martial arts, both Kung Fu and later Kick Boxing. I played traditional organized sports like baseball, football and hockey. Following my second year university in Saskatoon, decided to move to Toronto for the next 5 years to study Chiropractic. Upon graduation, wrote my Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia board exams as well as my American Board exams. I decided to move to Edmonton to begin practice with Dr. Bruce Simpson. I took over his practice in 1979 till 1984 then met Dr. Jan Klesko and we formed the Avenue Chiropractic Clinic where we both practice to the current day.

My health habits include exercising at least 3 times per week including aerobic and weight training. I also have a strong interest in nutrition and take daily supplementation to ensure a broad spectrum of vital nutrients are in my body on a daily basis over and above eating well. I prefer Daily Core Essentials from Douglas Laboratories as their products are pharmaceutical grade, award winning and ISO 9001 independently certified.

I want to thank you for spending the time to read our website and we would love the opportunity to help you reach a healthy life status too. I have a background in chronic pain management, but also see patients to maintain good health without pain complaints. Chiropractic changed my life for the better and hope you will consider it for your life too.

Dr. Bortolotto Asks some important questions of interest to North Edmonton residents - Chiropractor North Edmonton Dr. Bortolotto Asks...

What can a chiropractor do for asthma?
Many people think of chiropractic as exclusively dealing with the spine. But I'm interested in the spine because it covers the nervous system. Problems in the spine can produce problems in the organs and tissues controlled by the affected nerves—including those to the lungs and bronchial tubes. Find out how chiropractic care has helped those with asthma.
How could a child benefit from chiropractic?
Regardless of our age, each of us in North Edmonton encounters physical, chemical and emotional stresses that exceed our ability to handle. For newborns, it could be the trauma encountered at birth. For toddlers it could be from learning to walk or ride a bike. Many of the problems we chiropractors see in adults are the result of neglected traumas from childhood.
